The first
truly honest guide to dining (and other pursuits) in Central Kentucky.
Find out where to go, and, more
importantly, the places to avoid.
A
few sample entries:
Jonathan
at the Gratz
JJJ $$$--(Continental/American)
Another
of the very good new restaurants in town; in fact it’s one of my
favorites. Excellent and
imaginative food, well presented. The
atmosphere in the dining room can be a little stiff at times, but it’s the
result of the décor, not the people. With
its dark paneling, fireplace, etc., the bar is one of the most attractive
places in town to have dinner—in fact, the hunchback of Notre Dame could
score in there—and they serve the same food as the dining room.
Decent wine list, decently priced.

Merrick Inn
JJJ $$$--(Regional)
This
is one of the most attractive restaurants in the area, with a lovely bar
(where they serve really good drinks), an exceptionally-nice patio and
several attractive dining rooms. Food
is excellent regional fare. Good
service. The only problem is
that it is the hangout for several of the area’s most notorious and
unavoidable assholes, which is why I never go there even though I truly love
the place.
3380 Tates Creek Road (in Merrick Place) 269-5417 (Reservations highly suggested)
Botkin True Value Hardware
When I was young, one of my fondest desires was to
marry a deaf mute nymphomaniac whose father either owned a liquor store (1st
choice, of course) or a hardware store. This is the hardware store I
would have envisioned -- the real thing where you don't have to endure 853
departments such as underwear for oversized ladies and children's clothes to
buy a screwdriver. They have actual people there, too, to help you
find what you're looking for, and you can actually call in advance to see if
they have what you need.
